A collocation （詞語搭配） is two or more words that typically go together.

舉個幾個簡單的例子大家就懂了：

我們說一個人煙癮很重我們會說他是個heavy smoker, 比較不會說他是strong smoker 或big smoker,

或是洗衣服我們說 do laundry而不會說make laundry

但是撲床我們說make bed 卻不說do bed

為何要講到collocation? 因為他可以讓你的口說跟寫作sound natural, 而不會一直在寫/講中式英文！

再分享幾個常見例子：

big跟heavy中文都是大，

但是他常接在後面的詞語是有不同概念的！

big後面通常接happenings or events

Ex.

a big accomplishment

a big decision,

a big disappointment,

a big failure,

a big improvement,

a big mistake,

a big surprise

large後面通常接numbers or measurements

Ex.

a large amount,

a large collection,

a large number of,

a large population,

a large proportion,

a large quantity,

a large scale
